Our History

Number One Grafton Street was designed by the renowned PEI architect, William Critchlow Harris in 1894. Constructed by local contractor Charles McGregor the house was completed in 1895.

The house was built for Frank Heartz, later to become the 25th Lieutenant Governor of PEI, as a wedding present from his father Benjamin Heartz, a local businessman.

Originally called and known as 'The Cottage,' the house is of a Queen Anne Revival influenced design. It includes a number of features which represent William Critchlow Harris's capability as a very fine island architect.

A later resident of 'The Cottage' was the Hon. John Alexander Mathieson, Chief Justice and Premier of PEI who purchased the house in 1914.

In 1951 the daughters of Judge Mathieson, Dora Campbell and Jean Rogers turned it into a guest house naming it 'Caroma Lodge'.

Purchased in 2008 by Graeme and Judy Sheldon the current owners, the house has been sensitively renovated with special attention being paid to the fine craftsmanship of a period that has past.
